Church Street, Onehunga >>

The Church Street development comprised 38, three-storey terraced units to be constructed on a site previously occupied by commercial properties. KGA undertook a subsurface investigation comprising 12 machine boreholes and 22 percussion boreholes. These encountered variable ground conditions including basalt rock, volcanic soils and weak alluvial soils.

The variable geology encountered, from hard basalt rock to weak alluvium provided some challenges during site development, including rock breaking to remove basalt rock and the undercutting of the weak alluvium. Numerical analyses using Finite Element software was completed to determine the potential implications to the development if cavities were present below the foundations.

On-going construction monitoring and testing of the earthworks were undertaken and KGA provided advice on undercuts and the removal of unsuitable materials.
